The sessions are intended to attract more young people to the club and to provide opportunities to represent the club in competition - ahead of the 2009/10 season.

The new sporting opportunities have been made possible by a £10,000 grant from Sport England – which is working with local communities to get people playing more sport. The Spen Valley Flyers Roller Hockey Club has also had help from Kirklees Active Leisure, Kirklees Council, the Northern Counties Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) and The National Roller Hockey Association (NRHA).

Dan Messenger, Spen Valley Flyers Roller Hockey Club's Coaching Director, said:

"Spen Valley Flyers Roller Hockey Club is a new club and we are always looking to attract more members of all ages, from 5 years upwards. Our project is opening up our club to give the people of Kirklees the opportunity to learn more about the sport of roller hockey and to play competitively, potentially against clubs from all over the North of England. We're delighted to have received Lottery Funding to make it all happen"

Sport England invests National Lottery and Exchequer funding in projects that will grow and sustain participation in grassroots sport and create opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport.

David Gent, Sport England's Regional Lead for Yorkshire, said:

“The opportunity to try a new sport for the first time is often all a person needs to catch the sporting bug. The come and try sessions are a great way for people of all ages to try roller hockey and have a quality sporting experience that will encourage them to stay involved."

The Spen Valley Flyers Roller Hockey Club has a long and established history with the sport of Roller Hockey.
